High school tracks in Italy: all types compared
In Italy the high school tracks split into three big families: licei, technical institutes and vocational institutes. Within each there are several paths. Here you find them all, compared by length, focus and outcomes, so you grasp the differences in a few minutes.
The three big families
The underlying difference is the focus. The liceo bets on theoretical education and prepares above all for further study. The technical institute combines theory and practice with a more vocational profile. The vocational institute builds hands-on skills you can use early in work. All last five years and give a diploma.
Comparison table
| Family | Focus | After the diploma | Suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Licei | Theoretical, broad | Mostly further study | Loves studying, wants to keep options open |
| Technical institutes | Theory and practice | Work or technical study | Wants concrete skills without giving up theory |
| Vocational institutes | Hands-on, practical | Work in a short time | Learns by doing, wants to enter work early |
The licei
Scientific, classics, linguistic, art, human sciences, music & dance. Each has a different soul. For the most popular ones we have dedicated guides: scientific, linguistic and classics.
The technical institutes
Two main sectors: economic (administration, finance, marketing, tourism) and technological (IT, mechanics, electronics, construction, agriculture). They are the right choice for those who want a usable profile and at the same time the chance to continue with an ITS Academy or university.
The vocational institutes
They train hands-on roles in fields such as services, food and hospitality, healthcare and social care, maintenance. The advantage is concrete: you enter work sooner. Be careful, though, not to choose them just because they are "easier": every track has its own difficulties.
